Opening the Feet

The Arch and the Toes

I have yet to come across research that does not support maintaining a healthy supple arch in the foot.

Without diligent effort to keeping our toes flexible, they curl up and in. And they will not stretch themselves.

Key for Balance

Stability and Mobility are critical for improving and maintaining balance as we age. The Feet are an obvious place to begin. This seqeunce invites you to explore and open the tops, bottoms and sides of the feet. We detour to include the calves as well.

Connected to Everything

Connective Tissue, Nadis, Prana

One of the latest theories, put forth by Dr. Motoyama of Japan, is that our nadis (or meridians) can be found in our bands of connective tissue. Through these currents run our life force, known as prana, or chi.

Pressing on particular points (acupressure or marma points) is belived to help encourage the flow of this vital life force.

Reflexology

The feet are believed to be connected to our entire internal organ system.

Teacher Sources

Thank you. The teachings come from so many different sources, and it is a magical moment when they click. This series is most grateful to the wisdom of Arturo Peal, Jason Crandell, Angela Farmer and Tucker Adams.

Arturo Peal

Arturo Peal is one of our most favorite experts on practical and subtle anatomy. He holds a Masters Degree in Chinese Medicine, practices Craniosacral Therapy and has been involved in the "alternative" health-care field for more than 30 years.

Based in Santa Barbara, Arturo teaches Anatomy and Physiology for Yoga teacher trainings and studios, for body workers, and for other movement specialists. He integrates his expertise in Anatomy, Kinesiology, Chinese Medicine, and the healing processes to present a multidimensional understanding of the human body.

Jason Crandell

The Calf and Arch Torture come straight from the talented and knowledgeable teacher, Jason Crandell. Based in San Francisco, Jason teaches around the world and is a regular contributor for Yoga Journal. You can read more about him on his site, jasonyoga.com, and watch some of his videos here.

Angela Farmer

Angela Farmer was the first teacher to bring my attention to breath in the nostrils and its connection to the feet. This was a magical moment for me as it provided a doorway to an infinite number of small beautiful details to pay attention to. She mostly teaches out of her studio in Greece.

Tucker Adams

Tucker Adams has been mentoring and directing our work with the seniors of our community since 2007. Her loving and gentle approach to introducing and adapting the techniques of yoga for an older population is brilliant. We are incredibly grateful that she is taking us along for the ride. She teaches locally in Ojai, California.
