Spacious Listening: Refining and Deepening our Instruments of Perception of Sensation, Sound and Silence
with Patricia Sullivan

Out beyond ideas of wrong-doing and right-doing,
there is a field.
About the Weekend

It is easy to perceive music as a collection of notes, but the space in between the notes is just as much a part of the ultimate sound.

We'll hone in on one piece of Patanjali's advice from the first chapter and discover in the process how the space surrounding the notes, the "open wakeful space of our innate nature, is our only reliable ground".

In navigating through our conditioned reactivity to find ourselves moving and acting from our authentic self we study structure, energy, mind, consciousness and spirit, (the 5 Koshas) using the process of listening/observing all activity and re-activity to the experience in the moment while residing in the spacious open awareness. Asana becomes a deep inquiry along with its usual and highly beneficial capacity to open and strengthen our vehicle.

The workshop is best taken as a whole, but we welcome you to drop in and join us as you can.

Friday: The Roots
May 7, 5:00 to 8:00pm
We dwell within many levels and Yoga cosmology uses the metaphor of the 5 Koshas, or dimensions of existence, which can be described as a continuum from the obviously tangible physical body to the extremely subtle (and none too accessible for many of us) dimension of uninterrupted joy. Accessing one dimension affects the others. We'll tune to the notes of sensation and the surrounding spaces, and refine our awareness while opening and spreading our feet, increasing the mobility and strength of our ankles and allow our knees to feel supportive and fluid. Our base is our foundation from which we grow and key to our vitality.

Saturday: The Stem
May 8, 2:00 to 5:00pm
We will move our investigation up to our pelvis, sacral and lumbar spines and the organs and internal spaces in that region. With awareness to space as well as structure using breath, sound, movement, touch, we will play in this complex and often mysterious region of the body. The result will be a stable supported and fluid lower body.

Sunday: The Bloom
May 9, 2:00 to 5:00pm
Moving our focus up to the upper torso, head and neck, we will find freedom and stability within these vital and subtle structures using asana sound, and mantra to awaken, nurture and integrate the heart/mind.

When the soul lies down in that grass,

the world is too full to talk about.

Ideas, language, even the phrase
each other
doesn't make any sense.

Meet Patricia Sullivan
Patricia_Photo
Patricia Sullivan's teaching springs from a broad study of the yogic tradition. Breathing practices, Sutra study, directing the flow of energy through the body, and meditation happpen in her classes. Her style is is non-dogmatic and non-judgemental. She emphasizes process rather than end result, curiosity rather than "knowingness", and always brings to her classes a feeling that yoga is not only a vehicle for self transformation, it's fun.

Opening
We check in and share from the last 2 days.

We continue chanting of Sutra 1.33
This lasts about an hour.  We practice the chanting together and then we break up into pairs.
We eventually are lead to chant into the back of partner's hearts.
This was amazing.
Radical and bold and so powerful.

Heart Opening
At about 72 minutes in, we lay over 2 bricks to open the heart.

Neck Stretching and Twisting
We use the classic "Thread the Needle" Opener to play into allowing the neck to stretch.

Neck Traction
At about 98 minutes, Patricia shares a simple and very effective technique for tractioning the neck.

Shoulder Opening
At 112 minutes, Patricia shows a gentle powerful shoulder opener at wall.

Warrior 1 and 2 Application

We apply the neck and shoulder openers towards Warrior 1 and Warrior 2.

At 131 minutes, Patricia shares her shoulder, arm nerve, wrist torture technique.

Reverse Prayer
At about 140, we begin to play with a technqie to help bring the palms into reverse namaste behind the back.

  • A slow connection will affect video playback. Allowing the video to "load" before viewing can help smooth this out. Here are the steps:
    - Press "Play" and allow the video to roll for a few moments.
    - Then, press "Pause" and allow the video to "load" before hitting "Play" again.
    - You will know the video is "loading" as the bar to the right of the play button darkens gray.
    - This will also give you the option to scroll forward and back more easily.
